The first known use of the color green with envy is coined by William Shakespeare, who used the combination a number of times. It is believed that prior to Shakespeare's use, the Greeks of his time associated jealousy with an overproduction of bile, lending a pallid green cast to the victim. This could also be the source of the phrase "sick with envy".
Merchant of Venice (late 1590s - act III scene 2)
"And shuddering fear, and green-eyed jealousy! O love,
Be moderate; allay thy ecstasy"
Othello (1603 - act III scene 3)
"O! beware my lord, of Jealousy;
It is the green-ey'd monster which doth mock
The meat it feeds on."
Antony and Cleopatra (1607 - act III scene 2)
Lepidus is described as "troubled with the green sickness."

The origin is not certain, but Shakespeare may have started this color analogy by talking about a green-eyed monster and green-eyed jealousy in The Merchant of Venice

When one is jealous, deeply jealous of someone, maybe there is a tendency to hold one's breath, and his or her face turn green due to lack of oxygen?
