In this highly divisive period of our history, are there any issues or philosophies that transcend the whole red state/blue state mentality?

Yes, the Illegal immigration issue crosses lines. Those on both sides that I have spoke with share that they are mad as hell.

There are lots of issues that both sides agree on. The differences are the 'pork barrel' laws they try to stick into the laws to get them passed without them having to have much public attention on them. Some good laws which both parties agree on never pass because of all the little political sidebars that get attached to them.
Among the many things they do agree on, the main thing would probably have to be the love of lobbyist money.

the parties agree on more stuff than you think. if you ever get a chance, check out the washington post voting record thing, and look up a local official. it will show what he voted for, what his paries opinion on it is, and the opposite parties opinion. you will see a good handful of votes where both parties agree.

now are they usually minor issues? yes. however, they're still an issue.

Sure, we actually agree on most things. We should protect the country. We should take care of elderly, sick, poor, etc.

The big differences are in HOW we solve those problems. Of course, lately, most of that has been obscured by Democrats doing nothing more than calling Bush names. If they could get over their blind, irrational hatred, we could have intelligent debates about how to fix things.

of course... but it's obvious things...

like child molesters are bad

deaths of U.S. soldiers are bad

high unemployment rate is bad

terrorism is bad

wmcritter: you sound logical... yet apparently you aren't paying attention to your own party... have you heard the things conservatives say about liberals on here? there is no respect from your party... from Tom Delay and Bush... all the way down to the common question writer on here... the party that touts it's morality... do unto others as you would like them to do unto you...

None that I know. Democrats sole existence revolves around disagreeing with anything republicans come up with.

They all answer to the same masters. The American people are the only ones who can create change...but obviously, at least half of them aren't paying attention.
