The Red Shoes is the one you're talking about. There are so many...

The Goloshes of Fortune, The Flying Trunk, The Wicked Prince, On Judgement Day...just to name a few.

Here's a link to some of the stories, although I have the full collection in a book and love to read it from time to time.

Hans Christian Andersen (note Danish spelling) wrote over 150 stories, most of them somewhat macabre. Besides Red Shoes, they include Ugly Duckling; Emperor's New Clothes; Little Match Girl; Little Mermaid; Steadfast Tin Soldier; Snow Queen; Princes and the Pea; Nightingale; Fir Tree (one of my favorite Christmas stories) and Thumbelina.

A number of famous artists have illustrated Andersen's works, including Kay Nielsen, Edmund Dulac, Michael Hague, and the like. My favorite is Fritz Kredel, published by Heritage Press in several editions in the 1940s. For used book dealers who have these available, sometimes for as little as $10-$20, check

Grosset & Dunlap published a good edition at about the same time with another illustrator (Arthur Szyk), boxed with Tales by the Brothers Grimm, illustrated by Kredel. These were widely published and are available in fairly good editions for less than $10.

Andersen's stories are always thought of as children's stories, but they are understood on another level by adults and, in some cases, are rather disquietening for children.

Enjoy!!
