I think it's because people need to feel a sense of control. There is so much out of our everyday control: weather patterns, other people, etc. Even if one spends much time preparing, a catastrophe can still thwart the best intentions. So, how do you explain that? How do you gain a sense of control in a seemingly chaotic universe? Some people turn to religion, spirituality, and some to what you call superstition. It brings some sense of peace because people think they can influence the uncontrollable. By the way, feng shui has a rich and fascinating history, though you may get the impression that many of those involved with the practice today are new-age types--that's a newer development. You may wish to read up on it for more information (I am not suggesting that you practice it; just that you read up on the practice). I've listed some web sites for in the source area for you.

Superstition, like everything else, depends on the eye of the beholder. It is only superstition to people who see it that way. If you think feng shue, for example, is superstition, does your thinking it make it so?

That's because common sense is not very common! We are bombarded with superstitious stories when we're still young, and being young, we are naive and gullible and will believed anything we heard from adults.so we carry this beliefs into adulthood and pass it on to the next generation.Only a person with a lot of common sense will actually believed this beliefs and yet they still tell this to their children to instill disipline to them thus the cycle continous....

...because it is an explanation as to why things happen the way they do. also, people might want to stay away from bad luck, and they want good luck to 'come to them'. so in order to control their 'luck' they do certain things, such as, carry lucky charms. my great-grandma used to carry a piece of lettuce in her purse because she said it brought good luck.
superstitions are used because they can control good or bad things.
