She was born Ethel Agnes Zimmermann, in Astoria, Queens, New York, of a German Lutheran father and Scottish Presbyterian mother, although many people long assumed she was Jewish because of her pre-stage last name (which is common among non-Jewish Germans as well, particularly when there are two "n"s at the end of the name) along with the fact that she was from New York City. She was baptized Episcopalian.

What makes us different? We believe that God has a prophet on the earth today just like in ancient times. We believe that God speaks to this prophet and directs His church through revelation, the same kind of revelation that lead up to the bible being created. We also believe that the authority to act in God's name or the priesthood has been restored to the earth. We believe that we have been commissioned by Jesus Christ to go unto all the word an share His gospel with everyone. We are not perfect. We don't claim to be. We are just trying to follow our Savior Lord and redeemer, even Jesus Christ.

We actually try to LIVE the way we believe! (#1) we aren't perfect by any means...but we believe that God expects us to try to be. We believe our loving Heavenly Father still loves us enough to SPEAK TO MANKIND still through a modern day prophet and that He didn't abandon us like so many believe, when His Son, Jesus Christ left the earth. We also believe that scripture has & is given to God's children in more places than just Jerusalem . We believe that ALL MANKIND are His literal spirit children and all are of infinite value & worth and are not the depraved born in sin creatures that much of Christendom believes. If we become sinful & depraved it is due to our own CHOICES & misuse of our God given Free Agency in this life. We believe that sacred family ties live beyond the grave and that we can be together forever with our families - not all will - but we 'can'. There is much that is LIKE other christian religions and MUCH that is different. I like to believe that these differences not only set us apart from "the world" but they point to the significance and relevance of the Church of Jesus CHrist of latter Day Saints in this day & time.
