Because you're dealing with the federal government. They do nothing quickly.

I'd like to know the same thing. I filed my claim and it took a full seven years before the final decision was made. Then it was wrong. It's been in the appeal process for more than five years, and there is still no decision. I do know this... follow up, constantly. And enlist the help of one of the various veterans orgs like AmVets, VFW, DAV or whatever. Good luck.

When you have problems like this and you have exhausted all of your resources then your only option is to use your congressman/woman. They can get things done in days that you may never get done in your life time. All they have to do is send it in with their letter head on the papers and it becomes what is know as a Congressional investigation and they must report to his office as to what is going on. Are you filing for a service connected disability ? What is it you are after? This is how I earn my living. You don't need an appointment with your congress person. they all have satellite offices and all you need to do is take your info to who ever mans that office for them. The # for the veterans Administration is 1-800-827-1000. My work # is 412-809-3516 that rings to my desk. Call me Monday ---Thursday 8:00 am ---4:00 . I can help. You call me then I'll call you back so you back so you don't pay long distance charges. We can do this.Just have a pen and paper handy when you call.
My name is Harold
I am a veterans representative and I am one of the good guys. Good luck brother/sister. Anyone who ever wore that uniform is a brother or sister to all that did.

Are you trying to go at it by yourself? If so, STOP.
Go to a "VET Center" (you can find them in the phone book).
These guys work for Vets to get you through the claims process as quickly as possible.
My claim was processed and awarded in 8 months!
Now, if you have been going to a Vet Center, maybe it's time for a new case worker. 4 years is way too long.

the v.a. is a typical governmental bureaucracy and everything, from veterans claims to buying white out for the office, requires more red tape than anyone should have to complete! not to mention...staffing is being cut all the time because of budget constraints...always more work and fewer staff. it would take a massive overhaul to take care of some of the v.a.'s problems. also, there should be a patient representative at your local v.a. hospital..kind of an "ombudsperson" go to him/her and make a complaint on your behalf. i have seen some success with vets who have gone to the patient rep.

Because Wall Streets makes all of the government's decisions, and it just isn't good business to fulfill their obligations to soldiers and veterans. They simply don't care about people.
If conservatives spent as much time demanding that veterns be treated squarely as they spend demanding that homosexuals should be treated poorly, for example, all of our veterans would be fully supported.

It is because the United States government has for a long time been quick to "take" from our young men and make them SERVE but when done they forget them and "out-of-sight" is "out-of-mind" for the Rublicans especially.
