Most people tend to treat people they have had sex with much diferent than every other person they know, we do not give them the benifit of the doubt, we take them for granted, we tend to presume some sort of ownership of them so that we assume they will act in a way that we want. Does it not make more sence to do everything we can to make our mates as happy as possible every day that we have? When you look at the way mates treat each other is it any wonder what so ever why we tent to split up pretty quickly.

First of all, I think that it goes both ways- some females treat males that way, and some males treat females that way. The reason for it is because lots of people have their values mixed up so that temporary sexual pleasures are more important to them than emotional intimacy or meaningful long-term relationships. People today often consider "making progress" with someone purely on the basis of physical actions, sex being the pinnacle. Thoughts and feelings are much more important!
You point out too the idea that some relationships are built on "ownership" of the other person. This comes from people taking too much pride in their dates and not asserting themselves enough individuality. If people become too absorbed in their mates and that becomes the main thing that they look for in their lives for happiness and pride, then they are completely crushed when that person leaves. Independence and contentment with yourself as an individual feels better than clinging to another person for dear life.

Higher expectations means more easily disappointed.
And many people are insecure. Once you become close to someone, it is easier for that person to hurt you. They know your secrets, and your self-esteem is partially bound up in whether or not the other person likes you or not. If an acquaintance of yours thinks that you are a jerk, you simply don't care about their opinion, because you don't really care about them.
Also, you probably do not share your life with everyone that you meet. So if an acquaintance of yours wants to do something that you do not, you don't mind because you don't want then hanging around you all the time anyway (you simply don't care).
