I have a bunch of little bubbles at the top of my aquarium. Is that normal?

Yes, it's normal when the water is returned into the tank via the tank filter. This can also happen with bubble wands and aerated devices. Use an air valve to control rate of bubbles when using aerating devices.

Large number of bubbles at the surface of a tank it a sign of bad water. Most likely to much likely to much ammonia. Is your filter work correctly? Have you over stocked your tank, or stocked it too fast? Are you cleaning the gravel with a cheap gravel vacuum (aka siphon) weekly? I'd either get a water test kit, or ask if your local fish store (LFS) will test your water for you.


Note that bettas, and sometimes gouramis will attempt to create bubble nests.

Pobably to much one one kind of chemical. But if the fish are ok with it, there souldn't be anything wrong with it. But if they are dying, start the water all over. Empty it out and refill it with distilled water, thats the cleanest and purest water your can get. If you have a salt water tank, its a totally different story.

Depends on what type of fish you have. If it is a Betta Fish, the bubbles are it's "nest", showing that is is ready and willing to mate, or it is just happy and content.
