I remember it from when I was a kid, three kids bulid a spaceship in their back yard and go up to space and end up on the spaceship of some fat, green, wobbling, alien, monster thing that tells jokes and mimics the tv shows/character he has been tuning in to from his ship. can't remember anything else about it. any ideas?

This might be from the TV show Amazing Stories. Sci Fi replays them occasionally.
The kids end up on the ship and it's Three Stooges re-runs playing. They go on a tour of the hollywood homes and meet Milton Berle and give him a cigar. They go to a diner and the aliens' faces turn into vacuums and they eat everything ont he table, including the plates and silverware.
They kids didn't build a ship, but they built a giant antenna, so it's a little different. The episode is called "Fine Tuning"
I remember the movie called Explorers with River Phoenix and Ethan Hawke and I remember that they built a spaceship, but I don't remember anything else from it. Sorry!

Could it be you are getting two films mixed up? I don't know about the three kids buiding a spaceship but a little boy goes in a spaceship to navigate an alien home. The alien is a big eye and jokes and sings songs. The alien takes the little boy home but eight years have passed so everyone has aged except him. Interestingly the film starred Sarah Jessica Parker in one of her first film roles.

The Explorers. The kids go into space and befriend some aliens, only to have them learn about the wars on Earth and then begin to question humanity. It's an excellent moral tale about the horrors of war and the benefits of peace told in an entertaining way that all ages can enjoy.

it sounds like the explorers starring river phoenix (rip) and two other boys. they build a spaceship out of an old tilt-a-whirl car.
