I'm assuming that you're asking "how do you get to BE a judge" rather than how do you get TO a judge.
Ironically enough, both questions have the same answer.
Cash.
I'm not being flippant, or indicting the American Judicial System, but lower court Judges (Magistrate Court, Recorder's Court, and State Court) are appointed by elected officials. These people are not singled out for their legal acumen, but become noticed due to their networking skills and fundraising ability.
Cash is probably as good a measure of measuring legal skills as anything else. Not all smart lawyers become rich, but you have to be a pretty shrewd cat to make enough money to become noticed by a gubernatorial candidate.
Most Judges I know were successful attorneys before they became judges and had to take a substantial pay cut to become judges. You lose a little cash, but gain an amazing amount of power. Judges operate generally within their own discretion and have just as much power over their employees as Defendants in their courtrooms.

Do you mean how do you get to be a judge? If so you should work on your English first. Then (in the UK) the traditional route is to become a barrister (law degree for 3/4 years, dine at an inn of court 12 times [Might sound silly, but hte idea is that you will talk to, and learn from other more experienced barristers and judges], then spend two 6 month periods in pupilage [Basically being another barristers apprentice] then when you are registered with the Bar Council, you can practise as a barrister.) You need to be a barrister for seven years before you can get selected to be a QC (member of the Queens Council [Note when a king is on the throne, they will obviously be KC's]) A QC is meant to be the crem de la crem of the barristers in England and Wales (scotland and N.I have slightly different legal systems but the same highest court, The House of Lords). When you are a QC you can be selected through a series of private screenings (ie Lord Falconer (at the moment) gets recommended your name, then sends people around to observe you in court, Chat to people at your inn of court to get character references and whether they think you'd make a good judge) If all is good, you will be appointed as a Recorder, which is the lowest level of judge. A recorder is basically a QC on a 3 year trial period as a judge. So thats when you're a judge really. After you finish your 3 year trial, assuming you're good, you will become a district judge. Then get promoted to Circuit Judge, Puisne (pronounced peuny) judge, which is a high court judge, they wear red robes, then to a Lord of Appeal (i think they are referred to) who sit in the Court of Appeal, then to a Lord of Appeal in the Ordinary, which is a Law Lord, who sits in the House of Lords, The highest court, and obviously the highest level of judge)

Reggie: You are 100% wrong. The government has no control, or influence over who becomes a judge or not. Daddy has no control or influence. If te government had any control it would contradict Montesquieus Theory of Justice, which is very dangerous because it could lead to one person having too much power. M's T of J is that there are three arms of state; The Judiciary (Judges), the legislature (law makers) and executives (ministers). Each arm of state acts as a check and balance to make sure that for example, the judges dont gain too much power. A good example of this is actually in Star Wars III. I dont know if you're a star wars fan, but if you are, remember in ep 3, when Mace has Palpatine and is about to kill him, he says 'He has control of the courts and the senate, hes too dangerous to be left alive' Palpatine had control of 2 arms of state (the legislature and the Judiciary) he had too much power. Think about it, if the government had control over hiring and firing judges, no case against the government would be successful, because blair would only hire people who think the same as him, and could fire someone if they found against him. The courts would be powerless to stop his accumulation of power.

If you mean how do you become a judge...in England, I might be wrong but I believe...Daddy has to be rich, you have to go to public school, get a job with top law firm, learn to play golf, never EVER get an insight into the real world whatever happens, make large and very generous donations to the government, receive peerage and sit in House of Lords. By now your wig will be well worn...all of this is possibly speeded up if you have homosexual tendencies and an empathy towards paedophiles. Hope this helps and by the way, if you are a woman I wouldn't even bother thinking about it.

You have to be a lawyer in good standing to begin with. Municipal, criminal, and civil judges are usually elected by the people to serve an x number of years. So if you're a lawyer in good standing in your community, run in the next election when a judge's position comes up.

Usually you have to be an attorney for some time before being considered for the job. Some are appointed, but most judges are elected.
