Why are business T1 connections so widespread and expensive if they only have 1.544Mb/s?

Dedicated. A T1 ALWAYS provides 1.544 Mbps. You can have a contract with your phone company (or other service provider) with a guaranteed Service Level Agreement with a T1.

It is not possible to provide a guaranteed level of service and guaranteed bandwidth with high speed cable or ADSL connections. They are shared pipes.

A T1 is a dedicated connection straight through to the Central Office.
