Join the swim club or speak to someone who has swam competitively. Ask them for pointers to create less drag & less effort. You still gotta practice the techniques you learn until your muscle memory sets in & that takes repetition. Anything worthwhile in life is worth worling for.

Do hard sets but not all sprint. You should do maybe 3 hard sets and 1 sprint set.
This set we do alot:
25 easy
25 build
25 sprint
25 easy
25 build
50 sprint
25 easy
25 build
75 sprint
25 easy
25 build
100 sprint
50 easy
* This all comes out to 500 yards
** The easy are not really easy, it is more of a pace
*** We take a 5 second break at each end
Another thing is just to do 100 drill, 100 kick, & 100 swim as a pace/hard set. Repeat this 3 or 4 times.
Another helpful set is a 300 lung buster:
100 breath every 3rd.
100 breath every 5 th.
100 breath every 7th.
Last is am IM set. We do:
25 fly
25 free
25 back
25 free
25 breast
25 free
25 free
25 free
* You can also replace the 25's for 50's to make it extra hard.

I'm no expert; I'm not very gifted physically and thus can't swim very fast. But here are some things that hopefully might help you:
1. Streamline your body, so that you get the least amount of resistance from the water you're travelling through.
2. Try different mental visualizations to motivate yourself. As an example, I sometimes imagine I'm like a knife going through butter as I glide through the water.
3. Kick/pull harder (but not too much--see #5 and the source listed below).
4. Watch fast swimmers, try to emulate their technique.
5. Don't thrash around trying to increase the frequency of your strokes--lengthen the strokes while trying to streamline your body (as mentioned in #1).
Hope this is of some use!

1.Improve your stroke--- ask or watch other swimmers. usually if you have a perfect or near perfect stroke i can assure you you'll swim really fast even without a lot of energy.
2.do other exercise--- weight training to strenghten your upper and lower torso (esp. arms and calves. abs too if you are doing fly). Jog/ cycle to build up your stamina. And yes, stamina is very important. if you're out of breath there's no way you can swim fast.
3.Pace yourself--- count one two three breath instead of breathing whenever you feel like it. and it also helps you to swim w/o getting out of breath.
4.try to make your body as streamline as possible--- whether you are a fat or thin person, if you're doing backstroke or freestyle it helps to keep your hands and feet together. Dont spread them wide apart that'll create water resistant.
Joining a swim team will usually help a lot (provided you show up for practice) but their traing regime is hard. So if you don't want to train hard just follow what i wrote above and read other people's tips.
Good luck!

Work on your efficiency, getting the most distance possible with each stroke you take. Streamlining, gliding, and rolling your hips during freestyle and backstroke are always helpful. But the simplest way to become better is just to keep practicing.

There is only one way to become good at anything., and that is constant practice. If you lack the motivation to do this, then there is NOTHING else you can do to upgrage your skills. There are no easy ways in acquiring skills.
