The construction labor on the homes they build and remodel is for the most part non-union. Very few parts of the USA require union labor in the home building industry, one notable exception being Chicago, IL.

I saw this on a backgroound show once. they subcontract everything and each sub contractor is responsible for their own labor and Union happens in Union states and "This Old House" doesn't gaurantee the work of the subcontractors.
The guy who played ALF's dad on sitcom sued Bob vila for a lousy job and lost because Bob wasn't. isn't a contractor.
