Im pretty sure every President in the last 70 years have been married. Does a president need to have a wife to be president, so there can be a first lady? What if Hilary Clinton ran for president and won, would Bill be the first man?

They don't have to be married, but it looks alot better if they are. If a man running for president isn't married yet (since most people who run for president are older) people would begin to wonder why they haven't married yet ... are they hideing something from us? I suppose it would be the same if a woman wasn't married and was running for president.

If the woman or man running for president has been divorced, then I doubt they have a big chance of winning the election. It just doesn't look good. If they failed at a marriage then people may think they couldn't handle or be successful at being the president of the most powerful nation in the world that has 300 million people that are proud of that and don't want a leader that will fail them. But then again ... if there not married, it could possibly be a good thing as they would only have there job to think about and worry about.

With a married politician running for president, it just looks so much better. Especially if they have been married for a long time. It makes there life look alot more stable, meaning that can handle being the President.

As for Hilary ... I think she is going to run for something. Governor or President no one knows. But don't you think she would have dumped Bill by now? She's obviously keeping him to look good in politics.

And by the way people , Bill wouldn't have another affair if the Clinton's are back in the White House. It just wouldn't happen, he's not an idiot. It' s Jay Leno's wet dream, but it aint gonna happen again.

No. However, it looks good. It shows that he/she is a "family man". Relates to all the thousands of family "voters" out there.

I dont think there has ever been a First Man... not to my knowledge anyway. The term "First Lady" was sort of a anti-woman thing, when woman were only allowed to wash the dishes and have babies. wouldnt be suprised if the whole term was scrapped. Most "First Ladies" are big time bussiness women, and independant, not like it was back in the day.

Technically no, but realistically yes. Public opinion shows that they rather have a family man as pres instead of someone that has been divorced three time. Maintaining a family shows morals and other characteristics needed to win the popular vote for presidency.

this is no longer a call for, yet maximum adult men, and that they have all been adult men, are married via a undeniable age. We did have some widowers and one batchelor, Buchanan. yet a variety have been widowers on a similar time as President. Jefferson, Jackson, Tyler, Arthur, temporarily Wilson. And Cleveland exchange right into a bachelor while inaugurated and alter into married on a similar time as President

No a president does not have to be married. Chester A. Arthur's wife died before he became president so his sister served as first lady

You don't have to be married. But most are. Probably because they aren't so youg when they run. In Puerto Rico a few years back there was a woman governor and her husband was known as the first dame-o. So it was embarrassing for him and they divorced.

i don't think that you do have to be married to run.

ha ha! if hilary won, how degrading would it be to be in second command and be called 'first man'? but clinton is such a demoralized ham that i don't think he'd mind. he'd probably enjoy having affairs with the secretaries and running around the white house with his flabby white legs on display again. *yuck*
