When I turn off my computer, I get the usual blue secreen which says the computer is shutting down. Just in the past couple of weeks, however, it can take upwards to a few minutes before it actually shuts off and, frequently, just hangs for hours. I've done nothing different during that time frame except update my Webroot
Spy Sweeper. Any ideas?

I have 84% free space on my computer and I run anti-virus scans at least twice a week and defrag, even when not necessary, at least once a week. Also, deleted cookies and all temp files but still does it.

Could be other background tasks or programs that are causing it to hang. You can right click on your task bar and choose task Manager to see what is running. Then do a google search to find out what those tasks are. You can then use the Task Manager to end the ones you want. You can launch MSConfig to permanently remove unwanted tasks. You can disable all of the Start Up tasks in the MSConfig. But some things like keyboard quick keys and DLA for CD copying will not start on starup.

It all depends where the the I386 file is located also in the BOOT.INI file shows how the OS boots up.Sounds like there might be some errors on the hard disk drive. go to DOS and type chkdsk /f this will show if there is any bad sectors on the hard disk drive. if there is then your MBR is corrupted with a virus this will not work on XP but on OS 98\95\ME go to DOS type [fdisk /MBR only on windows 9x\ME not on xp!

When is the last time you used your disk cleaner? You need to remove temp files, it bogs your computer down, I had the same problem and after disk clean up its back to it's old self.

Maybe your programs were performing a scan of your computer for virus/spyware at the moment you turned it off.
