The reality is...and a great many people these days have an oil-slick grasp on reality...that Americans will NOT unite behind this war.
They will not unite to violate constitutional law. They will not unite to allow domestic spying by the Federal government. They will not unite to erase the simple humanity of the Geneva Conventions. They will not unite to butcher the rest of the world for the sake of our own country's greed.
Your argument is well expressed, and your sincerity is obvious. Your solicitation of criticism, as well as agreement, is rare.
But they'll be no truce on this war on war.
That's just...how it is.

Imagine you being an Iraqi citizen, then think of what terrifies you most? I would suggest that instead of appealing for unity on a fairly ungrounded basis you look at the real causes. You don't resort to terrorism basically because you are too happy to do so, terrorists as they are called don't choose that strategy just to have some good fun, it has to be a desperate measure. The proof of WMD in Iraq is still flimsy and there is no connection between 9/11 and Iraq. The ones in power say that they cannot negotiate with those they do not recognize as a party to negotiate with, it isn't the so called terrorist that refuse all negotiation.
Americans should unite on whatever injustice and imbalances closer to home rather than spend hundreds of billions of dollars on these wars in Iraq and on terrorism. Have a war on traffic, slums, immigration, labor that gets outsourced. Those billions that end up in Iraq and the other big billions in Afghanistan could make America a better country, for all Americans. Rather than having to bury those that fall in battles that weren't real issues for Americans to begin with. If instead of pumping 300 billion into the war on Iraq America would have bought oil concessions either in Iraq or another oil producing country there wouldn't have been this steep rise in the oil price. The latter is also the cause for all other prices to rise which will widen the urban-slum gap, result in more outsourcing and more cheap labor immigrants entering in. Should Americans unite to achieve all that? I truly wonder. But maybe by then Iraq is totally Hawaiianized and Americans who can no longer stand to be in America could try their luck as Ameriraqi or something. Those conditions are being set in place as we speak. That could be the best perspective I gather from all this.

The war in Iraq wont stop terrorism as there are extremists all over the world. I just feel sorry for the innocents involved and yes they do exist. Its sad seeing a man holding his dead child, we are too well educated to start acting like the barbarians that would threaten us to get what they want.

i'm 100% percent behind you. except the not fight them at home part - i agree we should wipe them out anywhere we meet them, but they are a problem in our own country too. eventually, they will hit us somewhere. i'm banking on DC or New York. i know there are hundreds of other potential cities but those two seem to be the ones that would make the biggest news.
