It's from the Native American Culture. The dreams pass thru the dream catcher and the good dreams filter down to the dreamer and the bad dreams get caught in the "web". When the sun shines in the morning the bad dreams are swept away in the new morning light. I just so happen to be Native American (Chippewa) and I have a dream catcher in my daughter's room. Do I really believe that they work? No, but teaching my daughter about her rapidly disappearing heritage is always a good thing, and if it makes her happy all the better!

In Native American culture, a dreamcatcher is a handmade object based on a hoop (traditionally of willow), incorporating a loose net, and decorated with items unique to the particular dreamcatcher. There is a traditional belief that a dreamcatcher filters a person's dreams, letting through only the good ones. There are related legends.
Dreamcatchers are an authentic Native American tradition, from the Ojibway (Chippewa) tribe. The people would tie sinew strands in a web around a small round or tear-shaped frame--in a somewhat similar pattern to how they tied webbing for Ojibway snowshoes--and hang this "dream-catcher" as a charm to protect sleeping children from nightmares.

I highly doubt it, I mean, it could act as a placebo (something that has an effect because you think it does). A better "cure" for nightmares is what many call lucid dreaming, which is basically controlling the content of your dreams. It's pretty hard though (about 20% of my dreams are lucid, but I'm kind of a natural).
When I was young, I said "I wish I wouldn't have a bad dream" before I went to sleep, and it seemed to work :)

Dream catchers really do work, as long as you believe...I got mine in South Dakota and I haven't had a bad dream since...surprisingly enough I haven't had any encounters with the mean (read: b*tchy) entity in my room either. The only dreams I've had since I got it were my wierd or "prophetic" dreams.

They are not expensive. You can acquire them online...even ebay. It's all a matter of what you believe. I have had mine for years...and I have only had 2 bad dreams ~ but not all dreams that are considered bad are necessarily bad for you. Many types of dreams can include deep truths about ourselves and our own distorted perceptions and we can learn from them even though we may fear them.
Find one that you like...but the true ones are made of sinew and usually have hanging feathers on it.

A dream catcher can catch good or bad dreams depending on how it's made.

yes...lore says that the bad dreams get stuck in the webbing and make it impossible for them to reach you. good dreams on the other hand can find their way through the webbing, down the feathers and reach you. i've had one over my bed for over two years and i havn't had a bad dream since.
