i am going to europe in october, and i need to know how much i should put aside for a couple specific things. The first thing is metro or bus or train fair through out the city. I'll be buying a rail pass to get from city to city, but while im in say, paris, i need to know how much it will cost me to get around. The second thing i need to plan out is eating costs. how much can i expect to spend to eat decently in the city, for about a week each place? the cities i will be going to are Paris, France, Geneva, Switzerland, Stuttgart,Germany, Copenhagen Denmark, and Oslo Norway. any help i could get from some locals or frequent travellers would be helpful! Another quick question: how easy is it to get around in these cities without knowing the language? Thank you so much!!!!!!!!! I mean we speak french from 3-4 years of it in school, but not much of anything else, except some german.

Most Europeans (a least the younger ones) have a good knowledge of the English language. They are required in school to take English as the first second language. Many speak 3 or 4 languages because well, traveling from country to country for them is like traveling from state to state for us. So, don't worry so much about language barriers. As for money, well, are you staying in youth hostels? They are very reasonable, but you will be expected to help out with cleaning and such. For rail, see below for the link:

Definitely take the rail pass! Saves money and hassle(my dad lived in Switzerland!! ) Also, go to the grocery store/fresh market where the locals shop and you will save money! Eating out will charge you tips/tax big time!! French should be adequate, german will be very helpful as you go farther north. And a great majority of Europeans speak decent englais! :) Have fun! pretty cheap on the metro but i suggest you buy the 10 euro tickets which you can use each day.

I found it quite pricey for the food, we had a few shots with our 1 course meal and payed £80. Theres a MacDonald's if you get short. Most of the french speak English, but if you get stuck take some pictures on your mobile of the loo! restaurants, trains, pharmacy, etc and just show the pictures, everyone will know what you want. Have fun

I suggest you go to the sites of public transportation in the cities you want for full information. Just go to any search engine and type "city public transport" replacing the word "city" with the name of the city you want. You will get all the information you need.

I don't know about food, but for language I suggest you buy basic phrase books either before you leave to there, or when you arrive at major rail stations. You need books in French, German, Danish and Norwegian.

I have been to these countries myself, daily travel fares are not too expensive and neither is eating out. But the Nordic countries are very very expensive so if you plan to visit these ensure you have enough finances with you or access to them!

If you can get by with your French and German and English you should manage OK but it is a false belief that everyone in Europe speak English! Do you own a Sony PSP? If so there is a translation umd/game that is quite handy!

Well, well, well, ... if you go to France and don't speak French : good luck ! If you travel all around Europe with just a little money : good luck again ! Take a good guide for each city, take a VISA card and a translator for France. Really, good luck !

You've picked the most expensive countries in Europe.... so you'd better be loaded... and it's always worth learning a few phrases in each language, failing that, shouting loudly and slowly in English usually does the trick.

One thing don't worry about the language. despite reports to the contrary we (US & UK) have a lot to admire in the rest of Europe, especially education and language ability. Have a good time, you will love it,

Sorry but if you're worried about all this then don't go. Everything will cost more than you estimate. To eat decently will cost.
