No one's mentioned Bert Jansch?!?!? And what about Steve Hackett? I'm talking about real inovators here. Sure, Hendrix did new things, but most of it was based around the power of an amplifier and the new electronic effects available at the time. Unplug Hendrix or The Edge or anyone like that and they'd sound pretty duff. Bert Jansch made the acoustic guitar sound amazing and Steve Hackett mastered all forms of guitar from soaring electric solos with Genesis to entire Classical Guitar Symphonies with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with a bit of 12-String magic thrown in for good measure.
Yes, Hendrix is revered by all and sundry but go and see The Hamsters and you'll see someone who has just practiced damn hard and has the same effects pedals and he can, and does play Star Spangled Banner exactly like Hendrix did at Woodstock. Some guitarists are beyond mimicking because their techniques defy belief, like Django Reinhardt.
Come on people, think outside the box for a change!

phil keaggy is pretty good, used to be considered one of the best but I don't keep up anymore. But, he is a christian dude so he won't make the spotlight like the others. In fact, I saw him a few years ago at a huge outdoor venue in WA, but he was playing during the day when he should have been a show closer. Even the christian community has no clue as to how good he is. The rumor I heard a long while back is that Hendrix was once asked who the best was and this is the person he named. don't know if it's true, but look him up sometime.
oh, and the dude from RATM/Audioslave...

Technically Speaking, my Top 10 would have to be (in no order):
Steve Vai
Joe Satriani
Eddie Van Halen
Dimebag Darrel (Ex Pantera/Damageplan)
Herman Lee (Dragonforce)
Alexi Laiho (Children of Bodom)
Kerry King (Slayer)
Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society/Ozzy Osbourne)
Michael Amott (Arch Enemy)
Chris Poland (Megadeth)
I've left Hendrix off because he was, and still is head and shoulders above everyone and will always hold the number 1 spot for me

Technically speaking, the world's best guitarist would have to be the fellow who established himself as an innovator, then burned up his hands in a fire and went on to become an even more astoning guitarist using only two working fingers on his left hand....Django Reinhardt
And you should be taken out behind the bicycle shed and spanked for putting dimebag Darryl and Brian May on a list with those other fine guitarists! (Oh, and Iconoclast is correct, McGloughlin should definetely be on the list!)

Technically speaking, I think the best guitarest would be:
** Rick Emmitt - Triumph
Other great guitarists -
- Ritchie Blackmoore (sp?) - Rainbow/Deep Purple
- Yngwie Malmsteen - Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force
- Randy Rhodes (w/Ozzy Osbourne)
- Steve Vai
- Michael Schenker - Michael Schenker Group
- Dave Meniketti - Y&T
Brian May (from Queen) wasn't even the best by far.

Stevie Ray Vaughan followed very closely by Jimi Hendrix....it isn't all about speed or precision its about the soul they put into the music - you don't have to be technically brilliant or play all the write notes you just got to play with passion and put your soul into it - people will pick up on it!! You can use 3 open chords in a simple blues rendition but you put yourself into it, it will sound like the best guitar piece ever!!

Well, first..that's Dime bag darrel.. he kicked ***..
Robert Johnson...he was the one who 'sold his soul ' at the crossroads....and cut a path for other guitarists..Jimi Hendrix was awesome!...knowing where his hands had to go,to play these notes he played,..I KNOW that took skill....Jimmy Page ..he makes me melt...,Clapton is awesome ,too...,Stevie Ray Vaughan..I cannot sit still when I hear that stuff., Yngwie Malmsteen rawked.!!!.John Petrucci,...Dave Mathews is quite a trickster,, his sound is smooth, but if you actually PLAY guitar, you know that stuff is pretty tricky...oh man...and David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)
I guess it depends on which KIND of guitar ya mean... there are sooo many greats!! ...
It's kind of like asking what's your favorite food. There's no definate best......some are candy and some are meat.

Peter Frampton! hah
I've listened into a debate about this before and the point that I have heard is that Hendrix wasnt "THE BEST" at the guitar. the reason why he is such a legend is because he created all these new techniques. He didnt necessarily 'perfect' them. I don't know, I've heard this debate too often haha.
