If we can bomb any nation into the Stoneage with our conventional weapons why do we need nuclear weapons?

Here is the irony. We spoke about bombing Afghanistan and Iraq into the Stone Age, when many people don't realize, that in the case of Afghanistan, and in rural areas of Iraq, they were close to those conditions to begin with.


As far as why we have to maintain our nuclear arsenal, there are several reasons for this:

1. It is based on a concept of brinkmanship, where if we pose a formidable threat, than the other side would be reluctant to attack knowing full well that such an action would result in mutual nuclear annihilation.

2. It is a highly profitable industry for defense contractors, who are major contributors to political campaigns.

3. It gives George Bush one more word to mispronounce. Can I get a "Nuklur" weapon! Amen! Thus giving the authors who record Bushisms job security.

We can't. Nukes do far more damage than even the heaviest of conventional strikes. During the first Iraq war, we were actually running low on conventional smart weapons, and we still faced a formidable ground force in infantry and tanks.

Because conventional weapons take a long time to do that. Nuclear weapons are nearly instantaneous. That is a nice deterent, especially against China.
