Interesting question. They get the least funding for research but we've encountered so much already. The philosophy behind all this is probably to search for the "big picture". Science was founded in the same philosophy as religion...searching for that grand space, time, energy, etc etc etc. We're never satisfied.

It's still much cheaper to colonize the land. When the land becomes too expensive to live on, people will colonize the ocean.

Not really. The ocean has its own issues like crushing pressure after a certain depth and icy temperatures. Not to mention one of the great parts of space is the lack of weather storms or seizmic events like earthquakes. All which will cost money to build structures underwater to resist these things.
I am not saying space is cheaper, but the costs are roughly the same I would think.

I used to have the same question. Here is what I learned: because of the depth of the ocean, the pressure is very, very high, At the present time we do not have the knowledge and/or the technology to resolve this in a reasonable manner.
I think the ocean is very interesting though...

If colonizing were the desire, I would start by "colonizing" deserts and mountain tops. Much easier than either outer space or the ocean--at least there is air.

Both space and the ocean present extreme hazards. Humans are not made to live in either one. Better yet would be to reclaim land areas that are inaccessible due to lack of water or access.

Cause sadly we know more about space than the deepest secrets of the ocean.
