I have an 11 yr. old boy. It always works if I take away what he is into at that moment for a week. It could be a game, the t.v., the computer, or just playing with his friends. The key is no matter how much they beg, go the full week. He will know that you mean business.

No form of punishment is appropriate for anyone. (I know. I may be the only person on the planet who believes this, so everyone else probably thinks I'm a nut, but I find punishment to be counter-productive.)

Understand why he did what he did. Help him understand what he did wrong, and why it's wrong. Help him figure out what he might have done instead.

(It's hard to know, given that we have no idea what the punishment is for.)

If there are negative consequences to the action, don't shelter him from them. If there is a way to make restitution, make him do so.

My parents would hit me where I live - take away my stereo.
