ummm....that's their income...why wouldn't they want to help you? Why would you think it's an act? It's their job. You're on the planet Earth, and that's the way things work in the United States of America. Do you have a job? Do you enjoy your job? Do you work at all? Once you grow up and join the real world, you'll understand the "mystique" of the way things work so that society can function and you can pull into a Denny's anywhere in the US and go in and have a waiter or waitress smile at you and actually bring you something you've asked them for! In turn, you'll have to pay for that service as well as that product, because you've gotten what you've asked for. You pay for that service and product with money that you're supposed to have earned at a job that you essentially perform that very same function at.

It's all a magical, wonderful, amazing world out there, but you'll see one day soon...it really WORKS!! Trust me. :)

They can't be doing it because they love their jobs. Do you know how much they make per hour? Tips are the only way they make a living. What's wrong with paying someone a little more to do a good job? Wouldn't you do a better job if you made more money as an incentive?

Some people just have a naturally bubbly, friendly personality, but most waiters/waitresses are just doing their job.

When I was a server, I hated most of the people I waited on. Of course it's just to make better tips! Most people behave like animals when they dine out. It should be mandatory for anyone who wishes to eat in a restaurant that they work in one for a minimum of a week first.

I don't think all servers are fake and also not all servers are genuine. That's how it is. I usually feel if somebody is being fake, but I don't care if I get good service. I tip well if they catered to me nicely and I did not have to wait for anything and got a good wine / food recommendation. It's a server's job to help you. So, it's just natural for them to at least seem to be helpful.

Yeah totally! I rarely get a waitress who I think is genuinely a nice helpful person.
At least if someone is only mildly helpful in an office workplace, you know they are being sincere

I hate to point this out, but most jobs require kissing butts. If you work at an office, you kiss butts, if you work at a restaurant, retail shop, etc. you kiss butt.

Even people who own businesses have to kiss butts. Customes, bankers, potential partners, etc.

Think about it, how many people do you have to please every day? I'm sure at least one.

Everyone likes to be treated decent, but nobody wants to do it. So we pretend to be nice to everyone and they do the same. Then we walk away and both think that the other was an idiot. Human nature! What can you do?
