Do we need the biggest house, the most prestigious car, etc? Do we need to keep up with the Jones' and do them one better? Air conditioning, cell phones, etc. I've got them all too but do I honestly need any of it? People lived for thousands and thousands of years without any of our modern conveniences-how?. What would happen if we didn't have any of this stuff, could American society still exist? Do we really need all this "stuff?" Is that all our society is- the pusuit of "stuff?" Are most Americans drowning in debt, working endless hours to "provide a better life," etc.? Is society really better off now with all this material goods and trappings available to us? Just wondering (and ranting) what others think.

At least you admit its a rant. Some things drive me crazy. The mayor of NYC wants to ban cell phones in schools, and the parents have a fit...my kid NEEDS to have that cell phone.
How new are cell phones? When did they become so popular? People have gone 100,000 years without them, and now it's a need?
We have one income in our house, mine, and I'm a teacher, and do you know what teachers make? ha ha
We get along fine. True, we can't afford some things, like cable tv, elite schools/camps for our 2 kids, but we have fun! I laugh when I hear of multimillionaires cheating on their taxes, or even better, going bankrupt, because they cannot manage on a 6 or 7 figure income.
Society is worse off with all the "stuff". Look what happens when a city loses power, it's the end of the world, so to speak. Look what happens when gas prices go up. People just complain that they can't buy as much "stuff". Not a problem for us. We just use public transport!!

No we don't need all that. But I can tell you if you have some Money in the Bank , it sure feels nice, when you don't have to depend on Soup-kitchens. But the main thing we all need is Health - NO not Wealth- without Health you are pour , no Money can help you there ,does not matter how much. We also need an open and kind heart to help does in need, and forgiveness. That all brings happiness.

In this heat wave I definitely can't live without my air conditioning.
But I think that we don't really need all that material things to survive, although it's much more comfortable if you have them. Sometimes I think that life is hard enough so if can be a bit more comfortable and happy it's not so bad.

"stuff" just makes insecure people feel better about themselves. I have to admit that I would like to be in a house and not an apartment though, just for privacy and the fact I can do what I want.

Good question. All the MATERIAL things I would need (not counting my family, right)
would be my Bible, clothes (Maine gets qutie chilli in the winter- and besides that I might scare someone and get in trouble for that!) and food and water.
