No, the buy-a-star registries are not recognized by anyone, they're just selling you a certificate. The official naming body for stars is the International Astronomical Union (IAU). Basically the only people who have stars named after them discovered something special about the star in question.
All the visible stars have either traditional names or are known by their constellation name and a number or Greek letter. Other stars are referred to by catalog numbers, which can be somewhat confusing because they are apt to be listed in multiple catalogs.

No. Star and planet names are officially recognized by the IAU. The star registries are not backed by any agencies or universities, and many issue certificates for the same stars over again.

it is a scam. the merely body that may formally call astronomical bodies is the international Astronomical Union, and they don't call stars. They call planets, comets, asteroids, and floor effective factors on planets. Stars those days are by and massive conventional with suggestions from catalog numbers. There are organizations which will take your money and declare to call stars on your behalf, yet such names haven't any authentic status and is not any longer used with suggestions from astronomers. do not waste your money!

Well....Marie L may have an Astronomy major......but when you have time go to this site and surf around....
http://www.permanent.com/archimedes/
Therer is too much food for thought.......and if you have a link with "Law" U'll find the site very interesting....specially what concernes "claims of Celestial bodies"...... because there is a loophole in the law which comes out of the conventions which are signed by all the "Big Ones"....
GOOD LUCK
