If he is fully breastfed, this could be normal. It is really only common for babies over 6 weeks old, but some babies do it a little earlier. A healthy fully breastfed baby (again, usually over 6 weeks old) may have a bowel movement only once every few days (up to once every 2 weeks or even longer); as long as it's immense and soft once he passes it, it's not a sign of a problem. If baby isn't exclusively breastfed, talk to your doctor.

I think you should call your Dr.'s 24 hour number just to make sure. Or call a nurse hotline. Sometimes babies will go this long without taking a poop, especially if they are breastfed. But since your baby is so young, I think you better err on the side of caution and talk to a nurse or Dr. or take him in to the Dr. tomorrow.
Try this too:
Lay him on his back and exercise his legs. Gently bicycle them, a few times, then, once again gently, bend his knees and push his legs toward his tummy, then straighten them out, do this a several times also. When my daughter was a baby and wouldn't poop for a couple of days, I would do this and it worked almost every time. You can also get a Q-tip and gently tickle the area around his rectum, it might stimulate him to poop. In an older baby it's okay to give a bit of apple or other juice, but I wouldn't do that for a one month old unless the Dr. says it's okay. Good Luck!

My sister has 8 month old twins and she had the same problem with her daughter at 6 wks. (It mysteriously coincided with her returning to work and leaving the babies with their paternal grandmother, who just so happened to put diapers on backwards!)
This is what she did: Give one teaspoon of Light Karo syrup.
or
Her pediatrician recommended Pear Juice, which the baby didn't really like.
or
At the pharmacy, ask for Glycerin suppositories (yes, they go "up there). Cut off the tip and insert into the anus.
or
Use your rectal thermometer and some Petroleum Jelly on the tip and barely insert the tip into the rectum.
These things worked for my sister. I know that is so hard listening to them cry.
Oh yeah, her doctor also changed her formula to some $25 a can lactose free, soy free stuff. I don't remember what its called, but I know she didn't use it very long. I guess its pre-digested. I would try the other things first.

Yes, kids can (and do) get constipated, 5 days is a little too many days to go without pooping. Check in w/the doctor but when my little guy was constipated the Dr suggested using 1/2 tsp Karo (Caro??) syrup in the bottle. It did help.

Yes in books about babies it's normal for some breast feed babies go without a poo even a week.Or if it's on formula then it could be constipated. You can see signs such as crying, gas, uncomfortable or they stop eating. In chemist's you can buy chocolate flavoured laxatives for infants as 1 month old.But firstly ask pharmacist to give you advice and a products for infants. But if your child is happy I would not worry about it but if even after a week nothing happen then consult your doctor just to be on a safe side

DON'T GIVE HIM PRUNE JUICE OR ANYTHING ELSE LIKE IT...it may make the problem worse or a more serious problem. Until his digestive system regulates, this will happen. I do suggest putting in a call to the doctor in the morning (unless he seems to be in pain or just isn't acting normal...then take him to the ER,

First check with your doctor.
My son started doing this as well. He would go 5 days and then have what we would call a super blowout that could not be contained by Fort Knox. He was never fussy about it, and his stools were still soft. So, as long as he seems comfortable and not fussy, and has soft stools, I wouldn't worry.

Why aren't you calling his pediatrician? You should NEVER mess around with the health of your child!! If you have a question or you're concerned, call the doctor, don't come in here. We're not doctors and we can't make a diagnosis over the internet.

its perfectly normal. especially if hes breastfed. my son went that long without a bowel movement and hes 7 months now and hes fine. I panicked too but the doctors reasured me that its completely normal. you can put dark karo suryup in his bottle though just a small bit if he acts like hes in pain, and pump his legs. like bring his knees to his chest several times. good luck. and dont worry he'll be okay

My daughter had a similar problem. Her Dr. said as long as she didn't go for more than a week, she was fine. He said that babies that nurse use more of the nutrients so less goes into their waste system. However, if it seems painful for him, you definitely want to talk the pediatrician.
