How about runescape.com? It's a java based game, usually with over 100,000 playing at once in over a hundred servers. You can play for free for as long as you want, with the option of upgrading to members for $5 a month. There are updates to the game on a weekly basis, although this is usually just for the paying members.

There is an MMORPG called Minions of Mirth, it is great, there is a free version and a premium version. Premium costs a flat $30. No monthly fees ever. There is Single Player and Multi Player. It is very fun to play. You just go to www.prairiegames.com and you can download it from there.

Well.. I can tell you that what you are looking for is MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game). I can only recommend Blizzard's World of Warcraft. The problem with it? It costs money.. a monthly fee, but it is worth it.
