C is a lovely letter, and it has two sounds--one is the hard "k" sound, and the other is the soft "s" sound. The soft sound is French, like "Charles, only it sounds like "Sharle", and the hard sound is like the Russian "Cyrillic" which sounds like "Kyrillic".

How letters form and change is part of the study of linguistics, and as linguistics teaches us the origins of languages, as well as the way they work, I don't think it's a useless letter at all.

It's just that there is no "c" in the Japanese "kana", so perhaps it seems odd to you.

'C' is the third letter of the alphabet pronounced as /si:/

But most of the time, it has 'k' sound & in some cases, 's' sound.
'C' has a sound ' /si:/ (see) but it is represented by /s/ sound.

Eg: Central is represented by the phonetic notation, / senter/
Ceremony is referred to /seremeni/ with short, 'e' or inverted 'e' sound.

Most other words have this 'k' Sound.

There is no special C sound. So, the letter 'C' can be replaced without any damage with 'K' or 'S'.

But 'C' has its use. In Grading we have 'C', C+, C- & it can't be replaced by 'K' or 'S'.. In chemical formulas, 'CO2' stands for Carbon-di-oxide. & the likes. 'cu' stands for Copper..

Just because the sound of 'c' is replaced by either 'k' or 's', the letter can't be got rid of. It is also necessary for notations & general representation.

To write 'Correct' as 'Korrect' would be awful & so would, 'Central' by 'Sentral'!.

The letter 'C' has a purpose! It is not useless!

I agree with you that C is useless. Any word written with C could be spelled using K or S. Although I am thinking that the CH sound might not come out right as KH as in church? What do you think.

Well in Cyrillic there is no S just C (has the 'ess' sound) and K, so perhaps S is useless. Excepte sometimes S doesn't sound like 'ess' in English such as the word Pleasure.
