The KEY to adding fractions with different denominators is to convert them into fractions having the same denominator.

Since -5/6 is already in 6ths, we don't need to touch this one. But we could convert 1/2 into 6ths. Doing this would give us 3/6.

Now that we've got the same denominator, we can add them together. We have -5/6 + 3/6, which would give us 3/6.

And since both are divisible by 3, we could reduce it down to 1/3.

Matt E is absolutely correct.
Remember, when adding and subtracting fractions, you must have like denominators. Since 2 is a factor of 6 you simply multiply 1/2 by 3 and add the fractions together.
