Some of the prettiest people I know would be considered "fat". Some of the most fashionable people I know would be considered "overweight". (I'm not just saying that-- I really do have specific friends that I'm referring to).

That said, it is worth mentioning that many women that carry extra weight have very low self esteem as a result of it. Because they have such self-worth issues, they put little or no effort into presenting themselves to the world in an attractive way. They don't style their hair, they don't shop for clothes that flatter their figures, and they often smoke and disrespect their bodies in other ways.

It sounds like I'm stereotyping, but this is my honest observation. I'm certainly not saying that no heavy people try to look good (remember my fashionable friend?) or that all skinny people put a lot of effort into their appearance, but, in general, I think that heavy people are more likely to develop a "why bother?" attitude.

They get their low self esteem in the first place from the media (at least in part). I'm 6'2 (yes, I know, I'm tall) and weigh 160 lbs. I'm a perfectly normal size 7/9! However, flipping through the glossy pages of Elle or Cosmopolitan is enough to make me want to work out endlessly and sustain myself on lettuce and crackers.

It's sad, really.

I know so many beautiful "fat" women-- I wish they could see it.

No they're not ugly, but being overweight is never a good thing because one's body is probably not functioning as well as it should. I've recently lost quite alot of weight at a group and I feel so much better for it, I'm more energetic and lots of health problems have receded. My husband loves the way I look (though he did before too) and I feel much more confident.

I think as well, the social pressures to be skinny are overwhelming and kids are growing up thinking that anorexic models are the norm. Plus different people have different tastes! Lots of men are always saying how much they love 'something to grab hold of' and I think that's so true. Different strokes for different folks!

No it does not mean they are ugly. It is what is on the inside that makes people ugly or pretty. I am over weight not really fat and i don't like that about myself it does not matter what others think,I am unhappy with myself and this point and have started doing something about it!

It is a changing fad in our society. Heavier women were considered attractive before this turn of the century. They were believed to be healthier, could carry a child to term and work hard on the land and to take care of their family. In fact, a man usually chose his wife based on the size of her hips, hence the term "child bearing hips" which ensured longevity of his family name. Look at some of the older paintings. People with big bellies were considered "prosperous" and thin people were poor from not having regular meals of hearty foods. The appeal to the stick-thin look is relatively recent.

I believe the reason is that mass marketers set a trend for people to achieve knowing that only a small percentage of people will fit into that ideal. This causes the rest to try to chase that ideal while spending tons of money (e.g. liposuction, gastric bypass, diet pills, fad diets, exercise equipment, face lifts, etc.). There is even a secondary market for mental health people as people flock to them because they blame all their problems on this or that one physical characteristic. The whole thing is designed in marketing companies to keep people chasing something completely unnatural and often unattainable.

Being a heavy person doesn't mean that you are ugly. As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Confidence in yourself with an average to high self esteem tends to be considered more beautiful than physical beauty.

I don't consider larger people to be ugly. What I hate is when they think they are ugly because they have a little extra weight. Attractiveness is half attitude.

It's another one of those bogus social ideals. Society dictates that it isn't attractive to be overweight, and the sheeple all agree. If everyone could just look at each other for not only their bodies, but their faces and minds and souls, the world would certainly be a better place.

I think being beautiful is on the inside. There is nothing wrong with a little bit of thickness. There is just more of you to love. Embrace tne beauty within

People can be pretty no matter what their size. It's what's on the inside that counts and what's on the inside brings forth more beauty on the outside to add to what's already there.
