If you mean stopping it from loading at start up, this is done in the preferences. Now it also depends which messenger you are using. If you are using msn messenger than that's how you do it. If you have windows messenger which comes with windows XP there is another way to turn it off. This way you can stop it from running at start up and if you want you can stop it from running completely, meaning it will not load at all even if you click it. This is in case you prefer to use msn messenger. So what you do is this. Got to Start > Run. Type in gpedit.msc. This is the local group policy window. Then look for User Configuration. Open that and you will see Administrative Templates. Click on the little + and open that group. Then do the same for Windows Components then go down to where it shows Windows Messenger. Click on it. You will see two items on the right. "Do Not Allow Windows Messenger to Run" and "Do Not Automatically Run Windows Messenger Initially". If you want to only stop it from loading at startup, then right click on the second one and select properties then Enable. Leave the first one alone. If you want to completely disable windows messenger, do it to both.

There are two ways to do it.

1. Click START, RUN and type MSCONFIG

2. Click on the START UP tab (to the right)

3. Look for MSMGSS, or something similar to this

4. Remove the check mark in the box next to it

5. Close the program and reboot.

METHOD 2

1. Downlaod and install Autoruns

2. Run the program and look for MS Messenger

3. Highlight everytime you see it and delete the text (be sure to search every tab for it)

Select "Preferences" under the Messenger menu. Autostart is the first item under the General tab.

Hmm, as in, it automatically logging on? Thats easy, just sign off, type your ID and password, and unselect the sign in automatically box.

But if what you mean is how it appears on your task bar everytime you start your computer up, go to Start>All Programs>Startup and right click messenger, and delete it.
