Sorry but that is not in my job description... I prefer telling people how lame they are and making them cry.

Interesting question. I think it is a tendency of most to think appreciating thoughts of someone without actually voicing those to a person. Yet, when it comes to complaining or wanting to give constructive criticism most people seem to be very quick to speak their mind. We should all practice being more free with praise. Speaking praise doesn't only improve the "hearers" self-esteem, it can send positive messages to the sender as well. Our minds are always "listening".

If praise is deserved, then it should be given. However, you do the person a disfavor to heap empty praises upon him/her. Also, if you praise a small accomplishment too much, you might give the person the impression that you think that's all he/she is capable of. I can't stand people who think everyone, no matter what, should get an award. It cheapens it for the people who deserve it, and it sends the message that you don't need to strive to do better.

We give praise and encouragement to children in order to build their
self -esteem, also so that they can learn and develop certain social ,behavioural and physical skills.
so why shouldn't that continue into adulthood?

Say the truth, without sounding like a complete asshole, and hopefully encourage the person if you're their friend.
