I am pregnant but this question is about my baby. I am almost 36 weeks. I am getting worried about my baby. I went to the doctor's today because of false labor pains. But my baby was not head down. I will be checked on Friday(by my dr.) to see if I am dialated. How do they see if you are dialated. Thank You!!

They basically (carefully) feel your cervix..it's kinda like an OB visit but it will hurt a bit..especially if they strip your membranes. They will check quickly - what they do is see how many fingers they can put into your cervix - 1 finger is about 1 cm..usually. Good luck!! and Congrats

To see if you are dialated the doctor will (to be blunt) use his figures to check your cervix. I also went into false labor at 36 weeks due to dehydration. I stayed overnight in the hospital being pumped with fluids and the labor stopped. I had dialated 3 centimeters already and it just stayed that way until I had labor induced 3 weeks later. Don't worry too much, if it poses a high risk to the baby, there are ways of stopping labor. And watch out for any unusual discharge (mainly in the odor) and drink LOTS of water (especially with meals) stay away from sugar drinks and salt.

It is not uncommon for your baby not to turn head down even up to a few days before delivery. Don't worry about that. To check and see if your cervix has dialated at all, is a very easy and painless one. They check you with a finger in your vagina, just like other pre-natal checkups. It's quick, no biggie, and they will know if you have started dialating, effacing, and how far into labor you may or may not be. Don't stress, everything is fine. Good luck and God Bless.

They move up and down. I would not suggest that YOU check your dialation. You could scratch or tear yourself, cause yourself to go into labor. Or otherwise cause yourself or the baby harm.

Relax... If they have done the right ultrasounds and everything is ok by the Dr. Then relax and take it easy for another 4weeks. Yeah I know it is hard but seriously if something were wrong there would be a huge change.

They do a pelvic type exam to see how dialated you are. It isn't painful or anything. And don't worry if your baby is not head down yet....they can move right up til the last moment....mine did.

They check your cervix to see if it is open. This is done by doing a pelvic exam. Don't worry everything is okay some babies wait until the last minute before they drop down.

They will do an internal exam kinda thing. not like a pap test but they will stick their fingers up there to check to see how big your cervix is getting. It only takes a quick min. At least it did for me and I had two kids but that was a while ago it might be different now.

Just like they have been doing all the other months, the ob/gyn will insert their two fingers in the birth canal and see how much it has open, "dialated," and "efaced."

With a pelvic exam it don't hurt at all, my daughter didn't turn around at all, her legs got stuck behind her head and I had a csection but its not that bad I was walking within 24 hours
