I work with children who have emotional and behavioral problems, and I have this friend who referred to the kids I work with as retards...I told her not to call them that, she said I offended her, but I believe i had the right to say she was in the wrong?

You had better get a definition on what a friend is, This person may be an acquaintance, but no friend. You are the one who has been offended.
