Well, I'm a doctor and I live among social workers all the time, GOD BLESS THEM! Because, basically we and everybody at the hospital "dump the crap" on them. By saying this, I mean all the work that no one wants to do. You really have to love to help people, social workers do a fantastic job, but I couldn't do it. There's a lot of burocracy, calling everybody, looking for places where people can stay and be treated properly, dealing with insurance stuff. I'm talking about the social worker at a hospital, but I guess it's not too different from what they do elsewhere.
I must say I really admire them, it's the toughest job you can pick. But if you like it, go for it, God will definitely bless you. I've seen that all social workers have something in common: a great love for people and desire to help them, and HUGE patience and a laid-back mood. If you have these features, go for it. If not, think about it, because your life can be really miserable.

My dad was a social worker for 25 years. It's kindof a depressing job. He use to have to go in the ghetto all the time to check out familys and the kids. He had to deal w/the people on and off welfare. Your clients are more than likely gonna be poor and not well educated. Not saying that every aspect of social work is like that, but for the most part it it. I know that I wouldn't want to do it, but if that's really what you wanna do it, I say go for it!

I am not one, but I know a few. They are over worked and under paid. You really have to love helping people to get any satisfaction from it.
