Yes, you can check to see if the carrier and phone provided work in the area. Sometimes the sellers will automatically allow you to check as an added feature to buy their item. Or, just ask the seller. Good lcuk, Hon!

Purchasing a cell phone and starting a cell phone service are two different things. The cell service company (T-Mobile, Cingular, Verizon, etc) determine if they have a local number available for you when you open an account with them. Of course you want to make sure the cell phone you are buying works with that particular cell company you want to open an account with. I see no reason to buy a phone then choose a cell company. The cell company will give you a free phone or uprade to better phone for a whole lot less.
