An ultrasound is safe but not always accurate. I had a scare with the ultrasound showing too much skin behind the neck, nuchal fold, which can be a sign for DS. Thankfully that was wrong. The amnio would be the most accurate and ith's not painful for you or baby. I've had one 9 years ago. Good luck for you and (*)

It depends on whether you would keep the baby if it were to have Downs Syndrome! If it is not something you feel you could adequately deal with then I would say have the amnio to be absolutely sure! If you feel you can deal with raising a baby with Downs syndrome then just have an ultrasound. You can always request a 3D ultrasound as the images are clearer and certain features are easier to detect. I don't know if your health insurance would cover it but its worth asking about!
Whatever you decide, I wish you the best of luck!

Ultrasounds are generally safer, though amnio's give much more definitive answers. I'm not sure I really understand what your blood test was about . . . maybe 1 in 160 chance of baby having down syndrome? Amnio's carry higher risk of infection and miscarriage, but still isnt a high chance, just a possibility - ask you dr about the risks vs. the benefits

They have new studies which show that ultrasound is less invasive and more accurate than amnio now...plus just FYI, don't fret, the AFP blood test has a 5% false positive rate.

First you need to ask yourself if the results will matter to you or not...I have a child who has Mosaic Down Syndrome...I was only 21 when I had her and they didnt have all the tests that they have today...when I got pregnant with my twins I chose not to have any of the testing because I knew that it wouldnt matter to me and that I would have the baby any way...HOWEVER...I am much older now and we are contemplating having another child..I dont know that at this age if I am up to raising another child with special needs..I know that I would have the testing and take it from there...the ultrasound is non invasive and they can look for certain markers for chromosomal anomalies..but it in itself is only another prescreening tool..only the amnio will tell you for certain...If I were in your place I would have the ultrasound and take it from there...best case scenario you get piece of mind and you can enjoy the rest of your pregnancy...Good Luck to you...

Personally I would just do the ultrasound. Their is a risk involved with the amnio.
The other thing to consider is what would you do if your child has down syndrome. If you would love it just the same, then educate yourself about raising one, just in case, but don't take the risk of the amnio. If you can't see yourself raising a child with down syndrome you might want to do the amnio to consider your options if it is.
Good Luck and I pray your child is healthy.

Ultrasound. It is much less invasive and you don't have to worry about any complications. Although it doesn't happen real often I have head too many stories of amnio's leading to early labor. To me that would not be worth it.

I wouldn't pay to much attention to that test. My sister had two kids and took the test and both times it came back saying they would probley have down's. With her second one they told her it was so severe that she should abort. I told her not to and she had the baby anyway. Both boys are perfectly fine and healthy. I do not know which of the tests would be more accurate but I would ask for a neucofold test (spelling). It is pronounced new-ko-fold. It is a fairly new technology but very accurate and it is just a simple ultra sound and a little finger prick. I had it done with this pregnancy. Good luck and try not to get stressed out about that test.

amnio is good, only if your extremely concerned and willing to abort if something is really wrong with the child, like down syndrome, if your happy with whom ever and what ever you have then i would say just do the ultra sound. i just did the ultrasounds with all 3 of my kids..
