I sucked my thumb until I was about 7...alot of times I did it at night and didn't even realize it. Of course it caused me to have an overbite. And, of course, I had to wear braces when I got older because my teeth were messed up because of it. Its a funny thing....when you're little, your thumb somehow tasted good....but after you've stopped you can try again and it just doesn't. The mind is a funny thing!

No but my son sucked his for 9 years.

One day he came home from school and said he decided he was too old to suck his thumb and he was quitting and he did.

I felt it was my fault as I followed the advise of the day from baby doctors( and not my heart/instincts) to let him cry it out one day by letting him cry it out in his own room (he had been sleeping with me and was having trouble moving to his own room) and the next day after I let him cry it out alone, he was sucking his thumb and rubbing the silky part of the blanket which he called his "creamy"

Both actions continued for many years.

I felt so guilty for ignoring my instincts which were dying to comfort him that even though he turns 33 tomorrow, I still feel bad when I think about it.

I did learn ,though,as my next was nurtured, breastfeed, for years, slept in the family bed and my oldest (the thumbsucker) came back and slept with us for a while.

I decided I knew best for my child and doctors commented how I was not like all their other mothers who just did what they said wiothout questioning (What--yes, it was once like that--in the 70's).

I ticked drs off for ignoring them (if I thought they were wrong) and my kids turned out great (tons of awards, teacher praise, and they are productive, nice men today).

I personally am a nailbiter and pencil chewer.;

Piaget (child pychiatrist) says having an oral fixation comes from problems stemming from the conflict between the ages of 0-2 years which is when a child learns trust vs. mistust.

Something happens to damage a child's security that there needs will be met consistdently.

I did, until i fell down one day and scraped my thumb on the pavement. I had to wear a bandage for a few days, so I stopped sucking my thumb.

My Old mate Warren... his sort of really started to shrink... so had to have it in a plaster cast to break his habit... after becoming immune to the liquid that is supposed to taste horrible, that they out on his thumb! (They being the doctor)

He started sucking his other thumb... he was doing this up until around 14/15

yeah, but not constantly...i rarely didn't tho...i did if i wanted to or saw someone else doing it. Now it just bugs be when i see little kids sucking their thumb...when they get older they can get crooked teeth and their front teeth can stuck out. This is why my teeth aren't crooked and don't stick out. I never really did tho...if I did it was once in a while.
