You can apply a light shade on the entire eye area and then go back with a darker complimentary color and line the crease of the eye and then about 1/4 of the way in on along the lash from the outside in. Make something like a sideways v on the upper lid and then line very faintly along the lower lash. Use make-up brushes. They work much better than the applicators that come with shadows.
Use your blush brush to blend your shadow with upward strokes so you don't have stark transitions between the different shades.
Compliment with eye liner. If you have large eyes, line the entire upper and lower lid from the outside in. The outside line should be thicker than the inside line. It should get thinner toward the inner eye. Line almost in the lashes and then smudge with your finger. This gives a smokey look that I love.
If you have small eyes, just line the outer corners of the upper and lower lid. You can even forget the lower lid and just line the upper lid a little more for a kind sexy, retro 60's look.
Love the eyeshadow, eye liners and blush by Beauticontrol. They sell their makeup in sets if you aren't sure what color blush, eye liner, lipstick and eyeshadow to pair up.
Finish with mascara. I like LashExact by CoverGirl

* How to Apply Eye Shadow *
Here's How:
Before you start, dust eyelid with a dampened brush and a little face powder. This will help to prevent your shadow from melting.
Choose three shades in the same color family - light, medium and a darker shade for contrast
Apply the lightest shade on the entire lid from brow to lash line.
The medium shade is going to bring out the color of your eyes. Apply from lash line to just above the crease.
The darkest color is going to be applied close to the lashes. Dampen the brush and then pick up a little color. Smudge it in around the lash base. If you have bags beneath your eyes, you might want to only line the top lashes.
Tips:
Use a touch of gold shadow on the brow bone to make your eyes look even brighter. You can use powder or one of those fat pencils. I have even used that liquid highlighter in a bottle and it gives good results too.
You might notice a tendency for your lids to appear somewhat crepey. This makes shadow application more difficult. To counteract this, stay away from bright colors. Subtlety is what you are looking for at this point, as softer colors are far more flattering and less aging.
Pearly shades are great for highlighting the brow bone and opening up the eye area.

It depends on what color your eye is but here is the general application tip. You may want to buy one of those quads of eyeshadows which have 4 shades of a particular color (say brown)
I have included a link which really describes in detail how to put on the eyeshadow - it is from CoverGirl - but it applies to any brand :) Good luck!

You should go to the mall and have your makeup done for the first time. It is really fun and you get some great ideas. Remember to apply it lightly though, some teens wear too much makeup and don't need it.

if you have blue eyes....put earthy (green, brown) eyeshadows on lower lids.
if you have hazel eyes, use baby blues on lower lids also
For brown eyes use purples on lower lids and a very light brown on upper lids to give those beautiful brown eyes looking wide open.
Green eyes are fierce. Use nudes and natural looking shadows so those eyes are as green as an emeralds!
bye bye! Hope this helps!

If you have a MAC store or counter i would suggest you go there. They help you pick out a color and will apply it for you and show you how to do it for free. Just keep it light and fresh!

Sparingly. Ask an older female relative, or go to a cosmetic counter at a department store and ask for advice.
