I'm guessing the questioner is young and just found this information and wanted to share. It may be old news to us, but it's new to them.

Additional Info:
Whatever you chose to do, plan ahead and just don't call 911 at the last moment. (unless you absolutely have to) I've delivered 38 babies and it's not my favorite thing to do.

What would a midwife do in the case of an emergency c-section? Midwives are not surgeons...ob/gyns are.

I think midwives can be wonderful for a lot of women, but wouldn't it be sort of wasted to end up forming this relationship with a midwife for 9 months, then end up having the on-call staff ob/gyn at your local hospital deliver your baby? Someone you barely know?

A lot of midwives are NDs and can perform a number of medical services. However not all states allow midwives to work unless they and CNM ( Certified Nurse Midwives ). Down here you can not work outside of the hospital setting. Which I think is really sad since childbirth is one of the most natural experiences a woman will ever have. Naturopathic Doctors can deliver babies too. Most are also certified as Midwives but they can work in the hospitals.

Yeah I had a Midwife with both of my pregnancies, and to tell you the truth I prefer a Midwife over an OB.
