I have used Dell, IBM, and Apple laptops over the years. Each has advantages and disadvantages.

The Apple laptops (I've bought two and had a third from work) cost a bit more money, but they never had viruses, didn't crash, and came with lots of software. The new ones, which I have not tried, can run Windows XP as well as Mac OS X.

The Dell laptop that I bought also didn't have any problems from a hardware point of view, but Windows was prone to crashes and viruses (not Dell's fault). I had to call tech support for a Dell desktop issue. They were fine. Not everyone has been as lucky as I was.

The IBM laptop was a tank. It was well built and virtually indestructible. It was also very heavy, as I remember. I haven't used one in years.

My roommate had an Acer. He was happy with it, but the battery died (under warranty) in the first 6 months. Tech support took care of it, but it did cost him a few days without his computer.

Look at the low-end Apple products (best college value for the money). They run both Windows and Mac (and Linux, if you are a Unix geek), so compatible software isn't a problem. Warranty is good, and if you shop around, you can get free printers, memory upgrades, and other things tossed in (which, you can also find for many other laptops, too).

I hope this helps you.

Sadly any reply that you get here that mentions good and dell in the same sentance don't know what there chatting about. (well apart from this one)

compaq, hewlett packard are getting there. Im guessing if your a student you want something that is easy and affordable.

To me that screems Acer! If you want more help you can give me a bell at my site (below) for impatcial, helpful friendly advice.

dell adds spyware to their computers. without even plugging into the internet my friend had almost 1,000 hits of spyware. my sister lab top crashed after 3 months and Dell said they couldn't do anything.

my family now has three macs and we have never had a problem with any of them. we got the first because it was an old model from my mom's school and we loved it. when it comes to a pc though i would recommend a compaq as i have never really heard anything bad about them.

Dell,HP,Compaq are all ok Sony is good but a little pricey. but heres the big question what kind of work do you plan on doing on it. cause dell, hp,compaq are only good for typing papers and surffing the web. if you gonna be animating or something you gonna need more punch

dells are fine. i'm on my 3rd in 7 years, but i abuse the heck out of them so i've been really pleased by how durable they are.

for every computer brand you will find someone with some bad story about it. (i personally will never buy a to-sh!t-a laptop again).

IBM laptops are very good because they really have very good batteries which means more working time and overall rating is also quite good because of its features.

I am also going to buy one laptop in the upcoming months, so i almost banged my head everywhere asking all the professionals and doing so many researches over the net, all i could say to you is choose IBM because its much better than any other laptops.

If you are really interested in buying one, i would recommend IBM Series (R51, R52, T43, T60, X41, X60, Z60)

You can download the product brochures for IBM laptops from http://www-8.ibm.com/lenovoinfo/in/brochure/

HP has Compaq Pressario, which has a long history of college use. See their ad in today's USA (July 27). ADD Students and Teachers OFFICE, from Costco, etc. for half the price of regular office!

Dell should be ok, cos i have been using their desktop for several years without problem. Can try Lenovo too, I heard it's pretty good.
