Why are the government letting these greedy b******s get away with this? It's an absolute joke!! I suppose that they will blame this on the hot weather... less gas being used for heating .... less profit for the big "Gas" boys. Imagine if we all did that! If you are a gardener and it pees down with rain for a month...... is it right to charge people more for the same service because you have to make up for the financial loss due to the weather? Yes..Yes.. I know that it's the price of oil,and I don't dispute this. However what a coincidence that this earthshattering news comes during a heatwave, which will obviously caused their profits to plummet, oh dear, how sad, never mind! They already make OBSCENE profits as it is. When they start offering to meet the needs of their more "vulnerable" customers with a little more compassion then people might be more inclined to give them a hearing at least. When old and infirm people have to start choosing between whether to have heat or eat. Maybe then, there might be some intervention of some kind. What happened to these promises of price capping until 2010? Or can they say what they like now without fear of anyone challenging them? Oh poo!! you can talk about it all day but if things don't change, they'll stay the same!! (Sigh!!)

Being picky - your first statement is indeed just that - not a question (so does not require a question mark... unless rephrased in the form of a question)

Whilst your second 'part' is a question - it actually includes the answer in itself..'boycott' being indeed the 'thing' you could do to try to impress your feelings upon the company. In this instance, let's say in the UK (where I presume this question emanates from - as I guess it is the British Gas announcement you refer to)...you need to get the vast majority of 'users' to join you in just 'not using' the products/s supplied by BG. (Hence a 'boycott').

In reality...if prices have gone up in the World market...then even a Boycott will not achieve much...because the company will not reduce its prices.

What you are better off doing then is permanenetly finding and adopting an alternative fuel for heating and cooking. The more people who do this the more pain it will cause BG (or other price hiking Gas Corps). BUT...what alternative is there?

Burning your wooden furniture, for instance, would be a short term solution.. and collecting twigs and logs...would lead to felling of trees very shortly, and we all know that would be a BAD thing? (I hope)

Your best bet is to look at all the ways you can improve the energy efficiency of your home to reduce the amount of fossil fuels you use. The less reliant you can become on 'world market based - scarce resources' (all resources like oil and gas must be consiudered scarce because they are 'finite') - open to the vagaries of political issues and limited by nature - the better.

Wear more warm clothes, improve your homes insulation, reduce any unneccessary use of ANY forms of energy...and the benefit that increasing prices MAY have is that we will at last be doing what we SHOULD be doing anyway... and reducing our wasteful fuel usage habits.

On another note...if BG DARE to mention 'record profits' in 2007... then the whole board of Directors should be 'shot' (ESPECIALLY if that results in 'big bonuses' for them)...it is about time large corporations all recognized that 'profits' alone are no longer the 'method' by which commercial success should be measured... Social conscience and benefit to consumers should figure MUCH higher on the agenda!

On NPR I heard by the end of the year it could easily reach $4 a gallon. They have us by the b**** because most of us get to work by car. When the gas prices go up then so will the price of public transportation, food, clothes, etc. Gas drives our life.

The only thing we can do is stop buying their oil enough that they mearly go bankrupt but that has to be done on a grand scale. If you can rally several million people to do this then gas prices will go down.
Another option is to find a cheap alternative fuel source that will work perfectly in our currently cars and enough of us buy it to put the oil companies in near bankruptcy.

he's making an attempt to get his inventory in oil quite worth $one hundred a share returned. Nancy Pelosi and something of their supporters are pleased with him! John, The very day that President Bush announce that he supported drilling, fee in line with barrel drop $20. If this is been reported as quickly as, this is been reported many cases that if Congress could enable drilling on American soil, the fee on the gasoline pump could drop decrease than a dollar a gallon returned. yet democ-rats are scared that the unfavourable may well be waiting to locate the money for gasoline returned.

We had a 'boycott' of some sort in CA - where a huge group of people took public transportation. It actually ends up saving you about $5000 - $15000 a year. Of course it does take time and patience, but utilize what the govt provides, ALSO see ifyour company contributes to you taking public transportation.

Yep, It was on the news today. Unfortunately, we cannot boycot them because we then wont have any gas. The idiot in charge of British Gas said today, he invisiges gas prices coming down in 2007/08 - Yeah! Whatever!

Yes, keep switching to the cheapest so they have to compete. Also, use insulation and energy saving to reduce consumption. British Gas is making record profits and ripping off people on low incomes. people with access to the net can check out who is cheapest on Uswitch and watch the market. If all else fails eat lots of beans and make your own!!!
