The urushiol oil binds to your skin and once bound, cannot be washed off with soap and water. It cannot be spread to anyone else either. It is gross looking especially when you are oozing yellow stuff, so you could wear long sleeves until it starts to clear up. Or you could just chase your coworkers and wipe your arms on them to gross them out. Depends on how much you like your coworkers.

Additional info after reading your previous answerers: The yellow ooze is not contagious. It consists of serous fluid, histamine and antibodies. It does not contain a "poison ivy virus" or the urushiol oil. It may appear that poison ivy spreads because when you scratch you send your body a signal that more histamine containing WBCs need to rush to the site to release more histamine. You may even break out where there was no urushiol contact because of a systemic reaction or memory cells from a previous infection. So - you can spread the rash on yourself only by your actions but not the cause of the rash to anyone else - with one minor exception - anything that you have that may have the oil on it like clothes, gardening tools, gloves, or a dog - can spread the oil.

Yes, You can spread it. Your Doctor is very wrong. Don't let your co-workers use the same towel or anything that you use for a while.

I got poison ivy for years until I finally did some research on what I looked like.

Haven't had it in a long time now.

Good Luck and Happy Scratching.

well poison ivy is not contagious to others and your co workers are over exaggerating, but u should be cautious because it is contagious only if someones skin has contact with the poison ivy affected area. So be careful!

The symptoms are not contagious. The oil that caused the reaction is long gone.

if there is still the poison ivy "oil" on your skin, that could be transferred to clothes, to other people.

Probably after the first 24 hours or less, the oil is either washed off, rubbed off, or affecting you.

this isn't like a transferable disease.

Hum from what i have been told the fluid that sometimes leaks out of the sores can pass it but if its dry it's not contagious.

As long as you've washed the area well with a good soap, there is no way that you can transmit it.

I thought it was contagious. After all if you have it on your arms and wipe your face next thing you know it is on your face.
