Hi,
I had same problem in AZ where landscaper put gravel over the box where the valves were.
If you can get, borrow, or steal a metal detector, that is the easiest way. Just start at the timer and work away.
If not that then you might have to dig and follow the wires from the timer to the valves.
It is a lot of work.
Good luck,
Bob

Do you mean the place to turn on the water for the sprinkler system, or the sprinklers themselves? For the latter, just turn on the system and you'll see water wetting the ground in the proper locations (and whereever leaks might be). If you mean the place to turn on the water to run the sprinklers, a metal detector sounds like the easiest way.
Or, if you know the previous owners, contact them and ask.
If you have a faucet near the house, the area close to that is a good place to look for a turn on for sprinklers.
You also might contact a local gardening company and ask them if they have an idea. They'd have experience with all sorts of sprinkler set ups and maybe they've even worked your yard in years past.

The valves will almost always be inside a covered box (usually green). There may be more than one valve station. For example, we have one in the front and the back. It will be along the edge of your lawn, or your house or garage, never the middle. It could be hidden in shrubbery, so those are the places to look first with your metal detector.

Sprinkler valves have a source of water and of power. Follow wires from a transformer that might be located in a garage or water heater/furnace closet. The water source starts near the water meter and pipes most probably run along a fence or along your house. I gather they are off and you can not follow by the sound or presence of water. Good luck.

Rent one of those hand held metal detectors for a day. Walk around your yard and each should pop up on the detector. First, you might want to contact a sprinkler company and find out if it's even worth your bother. If the grass has overgrown them, possibly they are now worthless and wouldn't work anyway.
