Eric Clapton's "When I See You In Heaven"

If you can get past the maudlin female background vocals that were popular in '60s and early '70s country music, then "He Stopped Loving Her Today", written by Bob Braddock and Claude Putman, Jr., would take first prize as the saddest song ever recorded in the English language. One reason is the chorus, which isn't delivered until nearly halfway through the song, and which finally reveals the cause of the singer's lament. This sudden revelation adds some surprise to the sense of sorrow, since casual listeners may not anticipate what the song is about from the beginning. The other reason for the song's sadness is contained in George Jones's masterful and straightforward delivery.

There is one beautiful song in by French singer Jean-Jacques Goldman entitled PUISQUE TU PARS (Since you're gone). Simply heartwrenching. Other than that, there is one called EVERYBODY HURTS by REM, which is not bad. There is also THE SADDEST SONG I'VE GOT by Annie Lennox off her 2003 release BARE. The entire album is very much along that line, and about breakups. Great lyrics! The same goes for one of my all-time favorite's singer, namely Bonnie Tyler, and her duet with Frankie Miller, entitled TEARS, off of her 1983 smash FASTER THAN THE SPEED OF NIGHT, which also comprises the smash TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART!
