Death toll from European heat wave in 2003: 35,000 ("In France alone, 14,802 people died from the searing temperatures...")

Could somebody please explain to me why we listen to Europe about anything having to do with good government, humane treatement of our citizens, or callousness towards human life?

Best question I have seen all day. I would give YOU 10 points for that one. I think the explanation is that within the US and in other countries, we are perceived to be spoiled, rich and greedy. Forget that our foreign aid is 3 times any other country. Forget that we invent 90% of the life saving drugs. Forget that we have the most active patent office in the world (read inventions) Forget that we are the largest food exporter in the world. Forget that during a natural disaster anywhere in the world we are the first and most effective responder. Yeah, they all forget, until the next earthquake, flood, eruption, famine, drought etc. THEN, they remember us. By the way, I don't listen to them. Why should I. You made that point.

well.. you're comparing apples and oranges... a hurricane that only hit a coast to a heatwave that hit an entire continent...

one lasted 2 days... the other months

it's like comparing Iraq to Grenada and wondering why so many are killed in Iraq... it's not even close to being the same thing...

I mean... it's a heat wave... what do you want them to do... build a big dome over the whole continent and air condition it?

and the other thing is it's made up of many different countries... it's like blaming us for what Mexico is doing... just because they are neighboring

Do conservatives have any idea about how to make a comparison that actually makes sense?

I'm not sure how to explain it Meg. That's just the current figures.
But may I ask, how you happened to read the CS Monitor? I some times read it, too. How do you even know about it? I'm just
curious. maybe the answer is the same for both of us.
