A blunt usually refers to gutting a cigar and using the tobacco wrap to roll marijuana. The blunt is used to describe the actual cigar because blunts have a blunt end, or an end that is cut off. A sweet is a cigar that does not have an end cut off.

Blunts are a cigarette that is a mix of tobacco & marijuana. I live i Texas, haven't smoked weed since 1987, haven't smoked tobacco since 2001 & heard of them back in the late 70's or early 80's from a Rasta man I knew.

I don't know the origin of the word, but a blunt is a slang term that describes a 'cigarette' of sorts filled with marijuana, usually makeshiftly made.
