One step at a time! -6 + 12 is the same as 12 - 6 = 6, +-5 is the same as 6 - 5, +3, is well, 1 + 3 = 4.

-6+12=6, and -5+3=-2, 6+(-2)=4; that is correct about the parenthasis: if they look like vertical lines, than the answer would be -6+12=6, and the absolute value of -5 is 5, so 5+3=8, and 8+6=14.

-6+12 cancels out to equal positive 6
then, you subtract 5 from 6 to get 1
then, you add 3 to 1 in order to get 4
4 is the answer!

The correct answer as you have written is 4
But i wonder if you got the parenthesis correct on the -5
if it is a straight up and down hash mark on each side its asking for the absulte value of that number and that would make the answer 14
