Also remember that the people who were responsible for the wrong doing at abu grab (sp) and Gitmo were tried and punished.

You're generalizing that the "left" hates America. Truth is the left loves what it stands for, but showing even one incident like that being done by Americans makes one wonder how we're any better than the people we're supposed to be fighting. It's a blatant violation of the Geneva Conventions. It's also a pretty safe bet that if it happened once, that we've seen, its also happened numerous times that we haven't. If you want to wage a war on ideals, you must be willing to adhere to the ideals you're supporting. You can't claim torture is wrong, and then get caught torturing someone...its hipocritical.
It's also just media propaganda. Just because the liberal media didn't show hundreds of people protesting the beheadings doesn't mean the people weren't outraged.
Comments like this are what's dividing the country. It's a similar strategy to using abortion as an issue, so people don't climb onboard the REAL issues. The majority of the population stands somewhere in the middle, but the media, both conservative and liberal, tries to goad people into believing that you can only take one side. Maybe its time both the Democrats and Republicans took a vacation after the next elections.

As an American loving liberal, I can say this:
We have a responsibility, as hard as it is, as a civilized nation, to put down our blood lust and behave like reasonable human beings. The terrorists treat their prisioners like animals, we have to be the better nation. If we treat our prisioners like they treat theirs, we will only fan the flames even more. If we treat our prisioners with the Genevia Convention, the worlds outrage will be aimed sharply at the terrorists, not split between what they are doing and what we are doing.
You shouldn't assume someone hates America just because we expect America to follow the rules and not sick to the level of terrorists.

Simple. The 8Th Amendment to the US Constitution states: "Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted." Our supreme law forbids mistreating prisoners, it doesn't specify which prisoners. In addition, the Geneva Convention prohibits mistreating of prisoners of war. America is better than that. Thousands of people have died to protect this and all our other freedoms.
To use the excuse 'they do it, why can't we?' is an immature and invalid argument. The Nazi's committed genocide against their enemies, why can't we? Al Qiada deliberately killed 3,000 innocent Americas on 9/11, why can't we? Well, we could, if we wanted to be as horrible as they are/were. Why can't we act like that? The answer is, we are better than they are. We owe it to ourselves to BE better than that.
In addition, by mistreating the prisoners, we only breed more people who hate America and the west enough to become terrorists. I believe the best answer to kill all the terrorist...with kindness. Treat them like they are humans, treat them like they have all the human rights that the rest of the world expects to have. If you remove their reasons for hating us, remove their fear of us what do they have left to want to kill?

No, the ones that ordered the torture were not punished. It was just the unlucky grunts that followed the orders that are doing time.
