If one of the programmers main ethics is that "the week should never have to be invented more than once", then why do so many companies do just that? Look at all the file systems out there, all the operating systems (many by the same companies). Why do we not just constantly fix the existing product, I personally believe this is a money related issue.

Think about it...you have 100,000 pages of poorly documented code, you fire all your workers...you bring new workers in....the first thing the new workers say is holy ****, WTF is this!!!

Isn't this very similar to the automotive industry? Look at all the cars out there, many made by the same parent company. Why don't we just fix the existing product instead of bringing out new versions every year?

I think there are two very basic answers: competition and the desires of the consumer.

If every auto manufacturer agreed to stop introducing new models, it might work. But you will never get all the car makers to agree to something like that. Either Ford, or Toyota, or Dodge, SOMEBODY will break the agreement and make something new and people will rush out to buy it because of boredom with the same old thing.

And that leads to my second opinion about what the consumer wants. People want "NEW"..... whether it's cell phones, songs, movies, TVs, iPods, or operating systems. As long as people demand "NEW", manufacturers are going to comply. And it doesn't even have to work right!! Look at all the people who jumped on the Vista Beta bandwagon and then complain when it doesn't work right.

But that's a whole nuther topic! :-)

They save money on workers.
They get money from people that have to buy their latest crap.
